Clothes make the Couple! You have to go with what is distinctly you - its your wedding!!! Have fun with it!! Dana and I went with a more 'out of the ordinary' style of tux and dress because we felt the most comfortable in that genre for our wedding. His tux was had a long overcoat and blue accents that were distinctly him - my dress was an ivory lace and satin assemble that reflected my love of all things old and victorian. You dont have to wear the traditional wedding garb if you dont want to - thats the beauty of it!! Before we decided on what we were going to wear, we had seriously considered a simple pale colored flowered dress for me and a nice white, flowing shirt and shorts for him - we had even gotten to the point where we told each other that we were going to say 'The heck with dressing up!!! Lets get married in matching Hawaiian shirts!!!' While we were at the resort - we saw people getting married wearing all kinds of different outfits - big poofy dresses with six foot trains, tuxes, shorts, kilts!!, bathing suits.... etc... The possiblities are endless to what you can do to personalize your Destination Wedding!! As a side note to all those who plan to take a traditional wedding gown like I did - you MUST have a game plan on how to get your dress there in ONE PIECE! Mine was not a huge poofy thing, but it was bulky and hard to pack.... Your options on transporting a dress of considerable size are as follows: - Ship it to the resort ahead of time - I couldnt personally send mine off to the great wild unknown but I have read of some women who did with great success. - Make it your carry-on - I have been told that if you tell the stewards on the plane that your carry on is a wedding dress, they will put it in the cabin closet. I have heard good (bride and groom treated like royalty! Dresses in perfect condition when they arrived) and bad (bride weeping at the check-in counter with a dress that they wont possibly let her on the plane with. Dresses hanging in cabin closets that are destroyed by the other things the stewards piled on it) about doing this so use your best judgement... I had three different planes to board coming and going - there was NO WAY I was going to try sprint through airports, holding my dress aloft like a battle banner and begging stewards to let me carry it on... - Check it - This what I did and people thought I was nuts! I got the biggest rolling duffle I could find, I put the dress plus Dana's tux in it, and prayed for it to get to our final destination everytime we changed planes. When it arrived in Jamaica SIX HOURS AFTER I DID, it was as perfect and as wrinkle free as when I put it in the bag!! Yes, there is nothing more pathetic than a young bride-to-be, standing in the middle of the Montego Bay airport weeping profusely that her dress is still in Chicago and she is in sunny Jamaica with the resort people telling her 'Not to worry, we rent dresses!!' But would I check it again - yes I would - it made it home on time and in one piece!!! :) |
